Can We Agree Oscars Sucks, Like, Permanently

I don’t mean that headline in the too-good-to-watch, “I don’t own a television” way.  Actually at its core, Oscars is everything I could want in television; show people bothering to get dressed up making maudlin, teary speeches.  I like the tribute videos and the obituary reel.  Its shameless sentimentality in a black tie, what’s not to like?

And better still, like watching a crowded Presidential Primary, Oscar is fun because most of the people lose, and lose something they’ve dreamed of winning since they were born, or before.

Point/Anti-Point: Should We Be Happy If Kathryn Bigelow Wins?

From time to time, Entertainment Inferno will present debates on the great issues of our day. Today, as we prepare for the Academy Awards, Richard Rushfield and Liana Maeby will debate the question of whether a Catherine Bigelow triumph in the Best Director category is an occasion for joy or ironic distance.

RR: I take a backseat to no one in my belief that Hollywood should have more women directing. It’s something that while I may not have said it often out loud, I have certainly thought it frequently. Nonetheless, there are many paths to progress and in my experience, few of them run through the Kodak Theater.
