Lane of Idol Memories: The First Great Tragedy

Filed under: American Idol — Tags: Richard Rushfield @ 12:31 am

The world was still young when Tamyra Gray was sent home.  We were young, innocent and believed that love could never die; that the best would triumph, or at least make it to the finals and lose in a close vote there.

But then, suddenly, one day we woke up and Tamyra Gray was sent home and Nikki McKibben, great in her own right, but on this day overshadowed by the shock, stayed. Listen to the screams of horror in the audience and you will hear the sound of a proud yet winsome Idol Nation realize that yes, one day death will visit us all; that youth is not eternal, and that we all some day must face our own elimination night  when the twin angels of death Seacrest and Dunkleman will swoop down and in one blow of their terrible swift swords, turn to ash all our dreams, all our memories, all our loves and all our cares.

That is what you hear in the Idoldome that historic night.  And after the goodbye song was song, we would never be young again.

Until Season 2.
